The terms “lifespan” and “life expectancy” are often used interchangeably; however, they have different meanings. Lifespan is the maximum age an organism could live to – it is the potentiality of how long that particular life form can live. Life expectancy, on the other hand, is the average age which members of a species or population typically live to. It is based on the mortality rate, or the number of deaths within a specific population.

Finally, it is important to note that life expectancy should not be used as an absolute measure of longevity as individuals will live for different lengths of time depending on their circumstances. Additionally, there are many other measures such as “healthspan” expectancy which considers quality of life and overall health in addition to years lived. Ultimately, life expectancy and lifespan are both useful tools to help us gain insight into our own lives and the world around us.
